Shenyang “Puma” Kicks Off in Style: Event Record Broken! Twin Sisters from Zhejiang Claim First and Third!

China News Service, Liaoning, June 15th (Reporter Zhao Guihua, Intern Wei Shiyin)

On the morning of June 15, the only Class A1 women’s half marathon certified by the Chinese Athletics Association in Northeast China—the “Red for Women 2025 Shenyang Shenbei Pu River Women’s Half Marathon”—kicked off in spectacular fashion. Some 6,000 runners from all over the country gathered in Shenyang’s Shenbei New District, racing along the Pu River’s scenic course, hailed as “running in a painting.” A new event record was set with a time of 1 hour 18 minutes 14 seconds, and the entire race was filled ewith highlights. From the professionally organized half marathon to the sweet and joyful fun run, the event once again demonstrated “Puma’s” standing as a benchmark brand for women’s road running in China.

The event was jointly organized by the People’s Government of Shenbei New District, the Liaoning Women’s Federation, the Shenyang Women’s Federation, and the Shenyang Sports Bureau, and hosted by the Publicity Department of the Shenbei New District Party Committee, the Shenbei Bureau of Culture and Tourism, and the Shenbei Women’s Federation.

A vivid reflection of Shenbei’s dynamic growth

When asked by a China News Service reporter about the deeper significance of the event for Shenbei New District, Xia Wei, Standing Committee Member and Deputy Head of the Shenbei New District, said: “The Pu River Women’s Half Marathon has been held in Shenbei for nearly ten years, evolving from a community activity into a high-level professional race. Its growth trajectory mirrors the vigorous economic and social development of Shenbei.”

Now, as the only nationally certified A1-class women’s half marathon in Northeast China, the race has been successfully held for three consecutive years. With its high-standard organization and people-centered care, it has become a shining cultural and sports symbol of Shenbei. Looking forward, Shenbei will continue to integrate culture, sports, and tourism, using the sports economy to fuel regional vitality, and shaping the “Shenbei model” of high-quality urban development empowered by sports.

Upgraded to “Red for Women” theme

This year’s event was upgraded to the “Red for Women 2025 Shenyang Shenbei Pu River Women’s Half Marathon”, with expanded scale, improved services, and richer cultural content. On the racecourse, women athletes embodied the beauty of strength and the spirit of perseverance. Incentives were diversified, with new “Best Friends Team” awards, tiered prize structures, and unique medals to encourage women to challenge themselves together.

The race also introduced more national-level referees and precise timing technologies, as well as women-exclusive supply stations, post-race recovery zones, and customized services to fully meet runners’ needs. Beyond the race, the event engaged female entrepreneurs, artists, and sports enthusiasts nationwide, creating a “Her Power, Her Economy” marketplace. This dual focus on professional standards and humanistic care added greater social value and emotional resonance to the event.

Organization and civility worth promoting nationwide

Marathon races require extensive coordination of public resources and safety guarantees. Shenbei New District established a high-level organizing committee led by the government and coordinated by more than 30 district departments, including culture and tourism, public security, health, urban management, emergency response, and market regulation, ensuring a seamless management process.

“The most impressive thing to me about this event was the high quality of our participants. After the race, the course was very clean—discarded items were neatly placed on the sides, and cleanup crews quickly handled them. This is a display of civic spirit, and I think other races should promote this,” said Shen Chunde, race supervisor from the Chinese Athletics Association.

In addition, the event deepened the “sports+” model by partnering with nearly 40 local and citywide companies to create a “special supply matrix.” Local brand “Shenbei Hao He’er” brought treats like chicken racks and sour plum soup, allowing runners to enjoy Shenyang’s signature flavors mid-race. With local farm products and delicacies, the event built a unique experience loop of “race in Shenbei, eat in Shenbei, play in Shenbei,” making the marathon a benchmark for integrating sports, culture, and tourism, and promoting a new model of “travel Shenbei through the race.”

 Building a year-round event calendar

Asked about future plans for leveraging ecological resources to create branded sports events, Xia Wei said:“The Pu River is Shenbei’s economic belt, scenic belt, and ecological belt—a microcosm of ecological Shenbei and a vivid example of the integration of production, life, and ecology. Based on the Pu River ecological corridor, with its ‘seven lakes, seven squares, six parks, and one museum,’ Shenbei aims to integrate ecology and sports, turning wetlands, waterways, mountains, and rice fields into development drivers.”

Going forward, Shenbei will further plan an outdoor sports system centered on the Pu River Corridor, Qixing Mountain, and Liao River Wetland Park, developing cycling greenways, hiking trails, and water sports, and building a four-season event matrix with “monthly races, year-round activities.” This model both protects the natural ecological heritage and activates the regional economy through the fusion of culture, sports, and tourism—pioneering the “Shenbei practice” of green, high-quality development within the Shenyang metropolitan area.
